Naghma Farooqi, MD

Professor, Obstetrics, Gynecology & Gynecologic Subspecialties

Providing high quality, reproductive healthcare to women across their lifespan-from teens to menopause-is my passion. As an academic generalist, I provide both obstetric and gynecologic care. My outpatient clinical practice includes providing in-clinic procedures including but not limited to colposcopies, LEEPs, and hysteroscopies. I also take care of patients on our high volume, high acuity, labor and delivery unit and in addition am part of the Multidisciplinary Approach to the Placenta Service (MAPS) as a surgeon. I served as the Medical Director of Labor and Delivery for three years. As a generalist I also perform major surgeries on labor and delivery, manage hospital admissions, the ORs and ED. My practice includes patients of all age groups--teens through post menopausal women--with a wide variety of OBGYN diagnoses. I perform minor procedures like colposcopies, LEEPs, and hysteroscopies in the outpatient clinics, but also enjoy performing major surgeries like open hysterectomies, MAPS surgeries, and perform life-saving surgeries for our patients on our labor and delivery unit. We are now the center of excellence for MAPS cases.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, I became one of the very first providers that started offering Saturday clinics. Through the pandemic thus far I have offered video and in person clinics for our patients. On the birth center I have advocated and implemented that no patient delivers alone. Even at the height of covid surges, we allowed support people with our patients, worked with the system to allow even covid positive patients to have support family members in the room.

Our major accomplishment in both 2025 and 2026 has been the culmination of many years of hard work on the unit to be recognized as one of the best maternity hospitals by US News and World Reports two years in a row. The work leading to this included substantial increase in patient experience, over 80% success in breastfeeding amongst our patients, almost a negligible amount of surgical site infections on the unit, zero maternal deaths, patient safety, managing diversion of patients, recognizing areas of billing and collections, improving hypertension postpartum hypertension protocols, a year's worth of work in improving postpartum care and discharges (ongoing), leader rounds on all patients, personal communication with all patients that complained via patient relations, implementation of designated roles for all providers on the unit, and accessibility of all people that work on the unit to myself and leadership.

Our L&D unit is a tertiary care unit that is able to provide care to some of the most complex pregnant patients in Northern California including those with liver/renal transplants, severe cardiac issues, cancers in pregnancy etc. As Medical Director I contributed towards making outpatient prenatal care and labor and delivery services align better by integrating their workflows so that we achieve safer, high-quality care and happier patients. I am involved in education, integration, and quality of care projects in our L&D and postpartum units.

I have recently dedicated efforts to education. I am the Clerkship Site Director and Clerkship Clinical Skills Director for OBGYN at Mission Bay and Mt. Zion.
