The Women's Health Center is a full-service, multidisciplinary ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology practice located at SFGH. To serve the hospital's diverse patient population, full-time translator services are available for 23 different languages.

Prenatal Care

Comprehensive services for women with uncomplicated pregnancies as well as those with more complex, high-risk pregnancies are available. These services are provided in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner to meet the needs of the diverse populations served by the Women's Health Center. Two specialized prenatal care programs are offered by the nurse-midwives. The teen clinic provides prenatal care and psychosocial services designed for adolescents. The group prenatal care program, Centering Pregnancy, offers Spanish language facilitated group prenatal care. This model provides enhanced health education services and aims to foster social support among its participants. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists supervise the care of the more complicated patients and also provide consultations to the many community health network clinics in San Francisco. Women receive treatment for pregnancy complications such as diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, cardiac disease and pulmonary disorders, as well as specific fetal problems such as congenital malformations or growth issues.

To ensure healthy babies for our patients, a large variety of services are available including nutritional counseling, prenatal diagnosis, ultrasonography, social work services, antenatal testing, childbirth education, CenteringPregnancy and breast feeding support services through our Lactation Center. A perinatal psychiatrist is available each week to provide both consultative and follow-up services for our pregnant patients with mental illness.

Gynecology

A wide range of gynecology services are available, including annual visits as well as a number of specialty services addressing dysplasia, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, menopause, gynecologic oncology, family planning, urogynecology, benign breast disease and other issues.

Obstetrical (Delivery) Services

A contemporary Birthing Center with the capacity to handle 2,500 deliveries a year provides a state-of-the-art setting for our patients. The staff includes obstetrician-gynecologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, clinical nurse specialists and registered nurses with both high-risk antepartum and intrapartum experience, as well as social workers, genetic counselors and diabetic educators. Unique to SFGH is the nurse-midwifery practice, a group of highly-skilled midwives who provide obstetrical care in collaboration with faculty obstetricians. SFGH is the only hospital in the city and county of San Francisco that is a certified Baby-Friendly Hospital. SFGH is also the location of the Bay Area Perinatal AIDS Center, a multidisciplinary group of specialists who are an invaluable resource for HIV-infected pregnant women.
