About Me

Hi, I’m Asia! I am from Charlotte, NC with family roots in Mississippi and Alabama. I grew up listening to the heartbreaking narratives of pregnancy and birth complications in my family sprinkled in with the joy and evolving definition of motherhood. I wanted to have hope that these were just horror stories of the past and that the future would look much different for my cousins and me. Yet they experience the same complications faced by our mothers. As a doula, I saw many mothers who reminded me of the Black women in my life – filled with determination to parent in the way they want and deserve. They, too, were met with various institutional and individual barriers to the reproductive care they deserved.

The opportunity to enter the field of Ob/Gyn feels like a love letter to the mothers before me, the long tradition of Black midwives, doulas, and caretakers, and those who fought and continue to fight for reproductive justice. The advancement of Ob/Gyn would be nonexistent without these fierce advocates, and yet their needs to truly make their own reproductive choices with sustainable resources are systematically neglected. I look forward to providing affirming, trauma informed care to restore and protect reproductive agency.

Why UCSF? I had the pleasure of doing the Family Planning elective at UCSF as a visiting student! Everyone felt like a family gathered around the shared purpose of providing the best care possible to vulnerable populations. As a medical student, I felt incredibly safe and supported to advocate for patients. There is such a flexibility and passion amongst everyone that allows the team to meet patients’ goals and maintain their agency. The training at UCSF will allow me to be a compassionate physician who is able to address both the disease process and the social factors affecting patients.

What I do outside of residency? I am a reality tv enthusiast who would absolutely win a RuPaul’s Drag Race trivia night. I love food and super excited to eat out and share many feasts with my new resident family! I enjoy baking and will absolutely share my poundcake recipe if asked. I have a knack for party planning and celebrating the loved ones in my life.
