Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

The REI Division focuses research and education on fertility and the hormonal conditions that may affect reproductive health. Our Center for Reproductive Health (CRH) offers a broad range of reproductive services from childhood to menopause, and together we strive to help all individuals meet their family-building desires.

Division Highlights

Innovation & Leadership
As one of the first in vitro fertilization programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are a recognized leader in the field with consistently high pregnancy rates.

The first UCSF IVF patient was treated in 1983, and in 1984, the first UCSF IVF babies were born to couples who shared in our role as forerunners in providing assisted reproductive technology. We were also the first in the area to achieve a pregnancy and birth through the use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), an innovative technique that requires just one sperm for every egg that is fertilized.

What Sets Us Apart
Our success emanates from a unique combination of outstanding physicians who are pioneers in their field; expert use of innovative technologies; and personalized patient care provided by professionals who approach couples with knowledge, understanding and respect.

We are committed to each patient, offering support, information and counseling as well as the latest technological procedures to make the treatment experience as rewarding and positive as possible. We realize that the process of resolving infertility can be difficult and trying. Our team makes every effort to minimize any confusion or frustration by thoroughly discussing all procedures and aspects of care and being available to answer questions and offer advice throughout the treatment process.

Our Vision
Our vision is to develop an unparalleled clinical and scientific program. The CRH is a multi-disciplinary unit that incorporates reproductive endocrinology, reproductive urology, psychology, genetics, embryology, andrology, and endocrinology. We are the only multi-disciplinary clinic in the western region and one of only a few nationally.

Prioritizing Patients
Our clinic environment is based on patient needs and comfort – optimizing privacy and care in the most technically up-to-date facility. CRH focuses on alleviating infertility – male and female, reducing genetic error, and preserving ovarian and testicular function that occurs with normal aging or a cancer diagnosis or treatment. These clinical endeavors cross the discipline of REI to the clinical fields of oncology, urology, genetics, pediatrics and fetal surgery, general medicine and beyond.

At the UCSF Center for Reproductive Health and Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, part of caring for our patients with the latest technology is conducting the research that leads to new treatments. We study many different aspects of reproductive health, including fertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, genetics, hormonal imbalances and the transition into menopause. Our patients make this possible by volunteering to participate in clinical research projects.

If you are unsure about what studies you qualify for, simply email us at [email protected]. Alternatively, explore different UCSF studies at clinicaltrials.ucsf.edu.

Please see CRH research page for the up to date info on new studies.
