Zuckerberg San Francisco General Obstetrics & Gynecology Division

Our mission at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Obstetrics and Gynecology division is to promote justice, quality, and equity in women's health care. We seek to eliminate barriers to good health for women in San Francisco and around the world.

As San Francisco's community hospital, it is our priority to provide exemplary patient care to all women, especially those who are under-resourced and under-represented. We are dedicated to training and inspiring the next generation of reproductive health leaders and to make meaningful change by improving policies and practice through research and scholarship.

Division Highlights

Obstetrics, Midwifery and Gynecology Clinic
Obstetrics, Midwifery, and Gynecology Clinic (5M) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General's campus is a full-service, multidisciplinary ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology practice, providing a broad range of clinical services. To serve our community's diverse patient population, full-time translator services are available for 23 different languages.

Prenatal Care: Comprehensive services for women with uncomplicated pregnancies as well as those with more complex, high-risk pregnancies are available

  • CenteringPregnancy: Provides enhanced health education services and aims to foster social support among its participants.
  • Maternal-fetal Medicine: Specialists supervise the care of the more complicated patients and also provide consultations to the many community health network clinics in San Francisco.
  • Lactation & Perinatal Psychiatrist: available each week to provide both consultative and follow-up services for our pregnant patients

Gynecology
A wide range of gynecology services are available including annual exams and a number of specialty services addressing dysplasia, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, menopause, gynecologic oncology, family planning, urogynecology, benign breast disease and other issues.

Gynecological Surgical Service
At ZSFG we routinely perform surgeries like hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), myomectomy (surgical treatment of fibroids), tubal ligation for birth control and surgical treatment of ovarian cysts and endometriosis. We also offer specialty surgery for cancers of the ovary, uterus, and cervix and advanced surgical treatments for urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

We offer the latest in surgical technology with minimally-invasive surgical options. These techniques allow us to perform complex procedures, including most hysterectomies, operations for prolapse of the uterus or vagina, endometriosis and cancer cases where appropriate through small incisions that allow for shorter recovery times. In addition, we are expert at vaginal hysterectomy—often the least invasive way to remove a uterus because there will be no incisions on the abdominal wall.

All of our attending physicians are board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology with many completing sub-specialty training as well.

Excellence in the setting of diversity
Best describes the obstetrical and gynecological services at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). Located in the heart of the Mission District, our medical providers and staff are dedicated and experienced professionals with a long history of providing competent and compassionate care to a diverse group of women and their families.

Expertise
The ZSFG division has 40 full-time faculty, including doctors, nurse-midwives, and doctoral faculty in a variety of fields.

Multidisciplinary collaboration
This is key to the success of our division's research and training arm, The Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. The Bixby Center at UCSF is comprised of anthropologists, demographers, epidemiologists, family practitioners, gynecologists, midwives, psychologists, sociologists and statisticians. Their interactive, collaborative approach to promoting reproductive health worldwide significantly improved women's health on a global scale.
