Learning Opportunities Open to Community Members

Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to connect individuals from the community with UCSF providers for on-site observation or shadow experiences.  There are also many other ways students from other institutions and community members can experience the clinical or research settings here at UCSF:

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Volunteer with UCSF - Volunteers have many opportunities to serve under the supervision of professional staff and enhance the quality of patient care, learn new skills, and explore a career in the health field. The types of volunteer assignments we have involve socializing and interacting with adult and pediatric patients, families, and staff in our hospitals and outpatient clinic settings.

  • Volunteer with San Francisco General Hospital - Opportunities include direct patient care activities at ZSFG, supported by the mission to provide quality health care and trauma service with compassion and respect, as well as indirect patient care activities such as research supported by the vision to advance community wellness by aligning care, discovery, and education.

Paid Opportunities

  • Explore job opportunities available in the Department of ObGyn & Reproductive Sciences by searching job listings here. Research Coordinator or Clinical Research Coordinator positions in the department are open to new college graduates.

  • Internships:

    • UCSF/Kaiser Permanente Undergraduate Research Internship (URI) Program - URI works to build a more supportive pathway for underrepresented University of California, Berkeley, undergraduate students interested in a career in medicine. Each summer URI engages 16 interns in a meaningful research project, clinical shadowing at UCSF and Kaiser Oakland, didactics, leadership training, and extensive mentoring during the 8-week program, as well as through the medical school application process.

    • UCSF Pre-Health Undergraduate Program (PUP) - The UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Training Program offers a summer clinical research training program for up to 15-20 underrepresented minority undergraduate students, who are planning to attend dental, medical, nursing, pharmacy or physical therapy professional schools after graduation, and who have an interest in a career in clinical research.

    • UCSF Summer Research Program - Program for undergraduate students in the health sciences with an interest in pursuing a PhD.

    • UCSF Center for Science Education and Outreach has a variety of summer camp and internship opportunities. More details here.

Educational Opportunities

The department regularly hosts lectures and other learning opportunities on various clinical and health topics.
