The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is proud to offer a wide selection of courses and electives for students at all levels and visiting students (some electives are restricted to UCSF students). REQUIRED COURSES

Life Cycle Block

Didactic and small group based learning during winter quarter of the second year with topics such as contraception, abortion, labor and delivery, pregnancy complications, menstrual abnormalities, infertility, and prenatal diagnosis. This program is run in OBGYN and the SoM by MedEd Co-Director, Naomi Stotland, MD

Core Clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Clerkship (6 weeks) during the third year in which students provide clinical care to women in the ambulatory setting and in labor and delivery. Ten different sites are available: San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), Mission Bay/Mount Zion, Kaiser General Southern Alameda Area (GSAA, formerly Kaiser Union City), Kaiser San Francisco, Kaiser Oakland, California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), Highland Hospital, and University of California at Fresno.

PISCES: Optional Third Year Core Clerkship Program

PISCES Program Core Clerkship one year at Parnassus and Mount Zion which students carry their own panel of pregnant patients and work with the ob-gyn faculty preceptors over the year.

FOUR-WEEK electives open to 4th year students

140.06: ADVANCED GYN at SFGH
Abner Korn, MD

The student will function as an acting intern on the gynecology inpatient service. Some gynecology outpatient and emergency room experience will be possible as well as inpatient and surgical gynecology.

140.09: ADVANCED HIGH-RISK PREGNANCY at Parnassus
Instructor of Record: Jeannette Lager, MD

This advanced high risk pregnancy clerkship focuses on outpatient special obstetrical care clinics and inpatient management of high risk antepartum patients. Duties will include presentations at conferences and journal clubs.

140.11: ADVANCED GYNECOLOGY
Tami Rowen, MD

This is a clerkship focusing on benign gynecologic conditions. The student will gain experience in the outpatient clinics, operating room and emergency room. Duties will include presentations at conferences, Journal Clubs and at least one review of a pertinent topic.

140.12: FAMILY PLANNING at SFGH
Eleanor Drey, MD

This family planning clerkship focuses on outpatient abortion and contraception services. The student will function as the senior student member (sub-intern) of the family planning team at the Women’s Options Center at San Francisco General Hospital.

140.20: GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY
Lee-may Chen, MD

The student will work with the gynecologic oncology team from UCSF, which includes UCSF ob-gyn residents, Fellow in Gynecologic Oncology, and attendings at Mount Zion Hospital. Clinical activities will include scrubbing in on cases in the OR, outpatient clinic once a week, attendance at Tumor Board weekly, and providing medical care for inpatient gyn cancer patients, whether post-op or with complications from chemotherapy or radiation. A topic presentation will be expected by the student at the end of the rotation.

Mark Rosen, MD; Mark Rollins, MD, PhD
(Offered by the Department of Anesthesia)

This course is designed for students interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The clerkship views labor and delivery from the anesthesia perspective, with emphasis on physiology and pharmacology. The educational and skills objectives are defined by the principles and practice of obstetric anesthesia. The student’s goal is to become a more knowledgeable, more skilled and more effective physician in an obstetric unit.

140.16: INTRO TO GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY
Lee-may Chen, MD

The student will work with the gynecologic oncology team from UCSF, which includes UCSF ob-gyn residents, Fellow in Gynecologic Oncology, and attendings at Mount Zion Hospital. 140.17: INTRO TO FAMILY PLANNING
Eleanor Drey, MD

The student will work in the outpatient Women’s Options Center with residents, nurse practitioners and attending physicians to learn about the newest developments in contraceptive technology and abortion. Clinical skills to be developed will include advanced pelvic exam skills and communication skills with patients. A topic presentation will be expected at the end of the rotation.
 

140.18: INTRO TO REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGY AND INFERTILITY
David Huang, MD

The student will work with fellows and attendings in assessment and work-up of infertility and endocrine problems, e.g., prolactinomas, polycystic ovarian disease, etc. Some time will be spent in the embryology lab, but most of the time will be spent with patients, including procedures such as vaginal ultrasound, ovum aspiration. A topic presentation by the student will be expected at the end of the rotation.

140.30: INTRO TO MATERNAL FETAL MEDICINE
Neda Ghaffari, MD

 

 

NON-BLOCK ELECTIVES open to 1st and 2nd year students

These electives are coordinated by student leaders and usually held during the lunch hour from noon–1:00 PM.
